Our annual conference brings together educators of German from all over BC for two days of professional development, collaborative networking and exposure to newest resources, methods and strategies in language teaching pedagogy.

We design our conference program with the aim of providing attendees with a broad array of sessions and events to further their knowledge and skills to become better, well-informed teachers, professors, and administrators.”

A wide range of workshops for Teachers of German were on the agenda for the 2023 conference.

Anna Rolston-Schmid of the Hueber Publishing House presented two workshops about Gendering in German and Holistic Learning with Projects.   

For the first time, Rolf Hirschkorn presented the new program of the BCHLA High School Student Exchange. 

A different approach to work with ChatGPT in the classroom was explained by Marie Stock of the Cornelsen Publishing House and Andreas Meckes presented a workshop about sustainability in the classroom.

This year the incorporation of virtual presenters from Germany extended the variety of the subjects immensely. Dr. Marion Grein presented about Cooperative Teaching Methods and Marion Singler from the Mildenberger Publishing House presented Reading Training with syllable sliders. 

Furthermore, Hans Stocker, Deputy Consul and the Head of the Culture and Administration Department at the German Consulate in Vancouver presented news from the General Consulate Vancouver and Berit Bein also presented news form the Goethe Institute in Toronto.

Challenges for the Future

A wide range of workshops for Teachers of German were on the agenda for the 2022 conference.

Learning about sustainability and diversity in the second language classroom is a subject that can be taught on every German language level. Two workshops about this subject were presented to the participants. 

A different approach to teaching cultural studies and different learning abilities of children were the subjects of the Saturday afternoon workshops.

How do soccer and learning a second language go together? A fun way to learn German was presented in the workshop ‘Stay On the Ball! Soccer in German Classroom’.

In the ‘MAL – Music and Language’ workshop well-known German folk and children’s songs were combined with age appropriate language acquisition.

Furthermore, Hans Stocker, Deputy Consul and the Head of the Culture and Administration Department at the German Consulate in Vancouver presented news from the General Consulate Vancouver.

Die heutige Lernkultur im Deutschunterricht

23. - 24. Oktober 2021

Ein breit gefächertes Angebot mit Anregungen für den Deutschunterricht standen bei der 2021 Konferenz auf dem Plan. Die Workshops waren u.a. ‘Erfolgreich unterrichten – Online und Präsenz’, ‘Was ist guter Unterricht?’, ‘Online-Unterricht in Kindergarten’.  

Weiterhin präsentierten die folgenden Gruppen Neuigkeiten aus ihren Fachbereichen: Zentralstelle für Auslandsschulwesen, Goethe Institut, UBC German Studies, Generalkonsulat Vancouver, Klett Verlag, Huber Verlag.

Ein groß angelegter Erfahrungsaustausch der Teilnehmer in Breakout Rooms förderte die Kommunikation untereinander und gab den Lehrern neue Anregungen für den Online Unterricht.

Nachhaltigkeit im Sprachunterricht

24. Oktober 2020

Der erste Workshop war zur KinderUni des Goethe Instituts,  eine neue Onlineplatform, die für den Tommipreis 2020 nominiert ist. Weiterhin präsentierte Fachberater West Andreas Meckes neue Ideen zum kreativen Schreiben im DaF-Unterricht. Ein groß angelegter Erfahrungsaustausch der Teilnehmer in Breakout Rooms förderte die Kommunikation untereinander und gab den Lehrern neue Anregungen für den Online Unterricht.
